Client Services

Our staff looks forward to providing you with high quality veterinary medical care. We understand how concerned you are about your horse and will provide as careful attention as if it were our own.

To give your horse the best of care, we have dedicated and experienced doctors and technicians, along with a fully equipped equine hospital.

There will always be a doctor available at AVS Equine Medical & Surgical Hospital to serve your needs. ALWAYS!

Arthroscopy: is a minimally invasive way to treat certain joint lameness. It allows us to see the inside of the joint with only a small incision in which to put the arthroscope. Recovery time is greatly decreased versus other methods.

Acupuncture: can be used in conjunction with or as an alternative to western medicine.

After Hours Emergency: we understand that after hours emergencies are stressful for you as well as your horse. Our team strives to provide you peace of mind. Our highly trained doctors will be there when you need them most – in an emergency! One of our veterinarians is on call for emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Please remember to leave a voice message that includes a phone number and to talk clearly and slowly.

Alternative Medicine: Dr. Steve Fisch is a certified equine acupuncturist. He spent a year studying acupuncture with Dr. Xie of the Chi Institute. Dr. Fisch has had great success in treating horses with lameness, back soreness, heaves, cribbing and othe common problems. Often a combination of eastern and western medicine is the best option for speedy recovery.

Computer Assisted Hoof Balancing: This state-of-the-art technology involves digital photos, digital radiographs and a computer program that measures and compares several parameters to a database of thousands of sound horses. The doctor then works with the client and farrier to slowly bring the horse’s hooves into optimum balance. Clients with competitive athletes have seen dramatic differences even after the first corrective measures. Many chronic lameness problems have been solved with this non-invasive procedure.

Dentistry: pneumatic floats are used on horses both at the hospital and at your farm. Pneumatic floats perform a much better job than conventional floats and it last longer too! Our doctors are very skilled in dentistry. Often certain training or weight issues can be a result of bad teeth. You are what you eat and good dental care results in a healthier, better performing horse.

Ultrasound: 3MgHz and 10MgHz ultrasound allow non-invasive diagnosis. The digital ultrasound machine produces the best possible images on tendons, ligaments, and any other organ or structure. It has the ability to focus in at anywhere from 3MgHz to 10MgHz. Each organ or structure has a particular MgHz that allows it to be visualized so that the most possible information is obtained.

Digital X-Ray: we have the latest in digital radiograph technology, which allows our doctors to provide you with immediate feedback. The image is shown on the screen within a few seconds and the image can be made to focus more on bone or soft tissue without taking another x-ray and adjusting the technique.

EKG: is a useful tool for diagnosing heart problems. An EKG can also be used in preventive medicine in a geriatric exam or in a pre-purchase exam.

Endoscopy – 1 Meter: Our 1 meter allows us to easily view and treat upper respiratory problems. The 1 meter scope can also be used to examine a mare’s uterus that has fertility problems that cannot be detected with other means and increases pregnancy rates with frozen semen and low dose insemination techniques by allowing the semen to be put directly into the opening of the fallopian tube on the ovulating ovary.

Endoscopy – 3 Meter video scope: allows us to diagnose problems deep in your horses’ stomach such as ulcers(shown at right). This scope allows both the doctor and client to view the horses’ condition at the same time. The video endoscope also allows us to capture images that can be sent to other veterinarians for second opinions.

In-house Laboratory: provides fast results on blood work, cultures, and other critically needed diagnostics.

Intensive Care: Horses can be kept in climate controlled stalls. Critically ill foals are kept in stalls with the horse’s safety and comfort in mind. Stalls have rubber mats on the floor and can be further padded with foam mats for extra comfort. These stall have hoist to in case a horse needs to be in a suspended from sling. The stalls also are setup so oxygen can be piped in and other medications easily given, if needed.

Mobile Veterinary Services: the equine mobile units are equipped for treating emergency medical and surgical cases at your farm or stable. Our mobile units can provide preventative health care as well as many diagnostic services such as: x-ray, ultrasound, and dentistry. Your horses will receive the same quality care at your farm or stable as they do at the hospital.

Reproductive Services: we offer services ranging from routine palpations to artificial insemination and embryo transfer. We stand stallions and have the ability to collect and ship stallion semen. We count each dose of semen to make sure the correct number and dilution of live sperm are put in the mare. We can culture, biopsy, and run hormone assays on those difficult to get in foal mares.
